In Waikato Hospital, a newborn baby attacked by a dog in a Hamilton household has died.
In the incident at around 7 p.m. on Sunday in the Hamilton suburb of Enderley, the child, understood to be just a day old, sustained serious injury.
The baby was rushed by St John Ambulance to Waikato Hospital and was in critical condition on Monday evening in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.
The identity of the infant and the breed of the dog are undisclosed.
Hamilton City Council animal care officer Susan Stanford said in a statement on Monday that her employees had been contacted by the police shortly after the incident.
“Staff collected the dog and it is now secured at the council’s animal control facility,” she said.
“Further decisions regarding the animal will be informed by the ongoing police investigation.
“This is a traumatic time for all involved and our thoughts are with the families and individuals involved.”
The death was referred to the coroner.
